Help Re-Elect Greg Sowards
to Placentia City Council

Endorsed By: Congressman Ed Royce; Congressman Gary Miller; State Senator Bob Huff; Assemblyman Chris Norby; OC Supervisor Shawn Nelson; Placentia Mayor Joe Aguirre; Placentia Mayor Pro Tem Connie Underhill; Former Councilman and Retired Chief of Police Russ Rice

Dear Friends,
You may have heard the news - that I'm running for a second term for a seat on the Placentia City Council and I'm asking for your vote and support in the upcoming election this November.

During the last four years as Councilman and Mayor, I've had many challenges with the City's budget and maintaining City services during this economic crisis. In addition, this past year I've had a personal battle with cancer. Albeit difficult, I'm on the other side now and I'm happy to announce that I've received a Liver Transplant and I am anxious to continue serving as your councilman in the upcoming term.

I'm also happy to announce, that after the city having overwhelming financial debt of over 30 million dollars, in only four short years our Recovery Plan is working. We are now just shy of a couple of million dollars of being in the black. This is a phenomenal feat for the Council to achieve in such a short time!

Other major accomplishments:

  • Hired new forward thinking City Administrator
  • Finished the Quiet Zone
  • Secured Funding for Metrolink Station through OCTA
  • Prioritized essential City services within budget constraints
  • Completed Bradford Avenue Pedestrian Over-crossing
  • Signed agreement with OCTA to complete major grade separations
  • Partnered with the Angels Baseball Foundation to build Tori Hunter Softball Field
  • Negotiated favorable settlement with waste-hauler Republic Services which brought over $2.5 million to the City's general fund
  • Introduced weekly Farmer's Market

State of the City Program

Key issues I will continue to work on are:

  • Continue implementation of our Fiscal Recovery Plan
  • Fund programs that fight crime and promote public safety in our community
  • Encourage new business development throughout our City
  • Insist on conservative and responsible use of the taxpayers' money
  • Advocate open government that respects and listens to citizens
  • Protect citizens' property rights and oppose eminent domain for redevelopment

Still on the table is the Transit Oriented Development (TOD), the proposed 100-acre redevelopment project south of Old Town. Its timing is affected by the current economic climate, but this area still holds a great potential to generate new revenue. I support a cooperative effort that partners the City with businesses and residents, and respects property rights.

Throughout all of Placentia, I've encouraged City staff to plan an increased emphasis on bringing new retail businesses to Placentia wherever possible to serve our residents and help generate the tax revenues that pay for public services.

In closing, I want to say that your involvement and support are critical if I'm to win a Council seat this November. Not only is your "vote for Sowards" important, I need your endorsement, a spot on your lawn for my campaign sign, and any financial assistance you can offer my campaign. Please take a moment to look over the enclosed response card indicating any support you may be able to provide, or feel free to phone or email me with your offers to help. Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Also, share your enthusiasm about my candidacy with your friends and neighbors. If you have any questions or would like to discuss any issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
